Dear Parents,
As we approach the Feast of All Souls, we often look for ways to honor our loved ones who have gone before us. I wanted to take a moment to talk to you about kids and death.
Death is a hard subject to talk to kids about. We, ourselves, have a difficult time talking about it, but for kids it can be particularly hard. They may not have the experience or knowledge that we have, which can make their experience even more difficult.
What can we do?
1. Make sure that no words or questions are off limits. We often want to make death sound more pleasant by using euphemisms such as “passed on” or “in a better place”. These types of phrases can be even more confusing for children. Dying and death are part of life, and using these words can help them better understand and express themselves.
2. Be open to sharing your thoughts, feelings and faith. Be prepared to model how you want them to share their feelings. When you are sad, scared or even if you don’t know what to say, say that! While you need to be careful not to overshare your fears or anxiety, letting your kids know that you still feel sad is okay! Letting them know that we don’t always understand God’s plan is okay as well. When children don’t understand something, they have the tendency to blame themselves, so making a safe space to talk is critical!
3. Model positive coping skills for your children. Let them know what you do when you feel sad and what helps you. “When I feel sad, a hug really helps me”, “when I don’t understand, I spend more time praying”, or “sometimes when I am sad, I will take a walk or shoot some baskets”.
Children grieve in different ways based on their personality and their age. Don’t shy away from honoring your loved ones in November!
If your child’s feelings of grief or sadness don’t decrease in intensity with time, or they are displaying troubling behavior, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
